You do not “delete HEIC” from an iPhone—you change what the camera saves next. Old photos in Photos stay HEIC until you convert or re-export them.
Before you switch
Most Compatible saves new shots as JPEG and new videos as H.264. You lose some storage efficiency and a bit of headroom on ProRAW/ProRes workflows. For most people emailing photos to family or uploading to Windows PCs, that trade is worth it.
High Efficiency (the default) keeps HEIC/HEVC and uses less space. Keep it if you live entirely inside Apple devices and iCloud.
Step-by-step: turn off HEIC for new photos
- Open Settings.
- Scroll to Camera.
- Tap Formats.
- Select Most Compatible (not High Efficiency).
Take a test photo. In Files or when AirDropping to a Mac, the extension should be .jpg or .jpeg.
USB to Windows still giving HEIC?
Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC is a separate setting:
| Setting | What USB copy sends |
|---|---|
| Automatic | JPG only if iOS thinks the PC cannot read HEIC (unreliable on Windows 11) |
| Keep Originals | Always HEIC |
If Automatic keeps failing, either set Most Compatible (above) or convert after copy with HEIC to JPG. Walkthrough: Transfer iPhone photos to Windows.
Existing library still HEIC
Changing Formats does not rewrite your camera roll. Options:
- Convert on PC — copy via USB or iCloud, then batch convert in the browser.
- Share as JPG from iPhone — Photos → Share → options may offer Automatic format; not reliable for bulk.
- Mac Preview — export selected images as JPEG (Mac guide).
When we recommend keeping HEIC on the phone
You shoot hundreds of photos per week and pay for minimal iCloud storage. You edit only on iPhone/iPad/Mac. You rarely email full-resolution files.
When Windows, Outlook, or print shops enter the picture, JPG on capture or convert-after-transfer is simpler.
