Open iPhone HEIC Photos on Android
2026-05-24 · 7 min read
When iPhone users share photos, Android recipients often get .heic files that won't open in gallery apps, WhatsApp previews, or school portals.
On a PC or Mac, use HEIC to JPG to batch-convert, then re-share JPGs. On Android Chrome, you can also convert directly on the phone.
Why Android + HEIC breaks
- Google Photos on Android 9+ can display many HEIC files but sharing/export as JPG is inconsistent.
- Samsung Gallery, Messages, and older apps often reject HEIC uploads.
- Email attachments may show a generic file icon instead of a preview.
- Cross-platform family groups (iPhone → Android) are the #1 real-world pain.
Method 1: Convert on desktop, share JPG (most reliable)
- AirDrop/Drive/USB the HEIC files to a Windows or Mac PC.
- Open HEIC to JPG in Chrome or Edge.
- Convert → Download all as ZIP.
- Send JPGs via Drive link, email, or messaging.
Method 2: Convert on Android in Chrome
- Open Chrome on Android.
- Visit HEIC to JPG.
- Tap Browse files and pick HEIC from Downloads or Google Drive.
- Convert and download JPGs to the phone.
Works for a few files; large batches are easier on desktop.
Method 3: Change iPhone camera for future photos
Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible saves new shots as JPG. Existing HEIC still need conversion.
Privacy note
Avoid random "free online converters" that upload your family photos. Browser-local tools keep bytes on your device, see verify with DevTools.
