HEIC Won't Open in Photoshop? (2026 Fix for Windows & Mac)
2026-06-15 · 8 min read
Short answer: If Photoshop will not open iPhone HEIC files, batch-convert to JPG (or PNG for layers) in your browser at HEIC to JPG, then File → Open the JPGs. Decoding stays on your PC—no upload to our servers.
You double-click a .heic from your iPhone folder and Photoshop shows "Could not open," "unsupported format," or spins forever. Photos on your phone looks fine. This is normal: Photoshop expects JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or PSD for most workflows, and HEIC needs OS codecs Adobe does not always bundle.
Why Photoshop fails on HEIC (even when Preview works)
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Gray icon in Bridge, Photoshop won't open | Missing or blocked HEIF/HEVC codecs on Windows |
| Opens in Camera Raw once, breaks in Actions | Scripts target JPG paths, not HEIC |
| "Could not complete your request" on Mac | Older Photoshop build without HEIF support |
| Opens single file, batch import fails | Mixed .heic + .mov Live Photo pairs confuse filters |
Windows 10/11 may preview HEIC in Photos after a Store codec install, but Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, and automation still prefer converted JPG/PNG. Corporate laptops often block Store installs entirely.
Fix workflow (convert first, edit second)
- Copy iPhone photos to a project folder on your edit machine.
- Open HEIC to JPG in Chrome or Edge (Windows) or Safari/Chrome (Mac).
- Drop all .heic files, set JPEG quality 88–95% for retouching headroom.
- Download individual JPGs or a ZIP for large shoots.
- In Photoshop: File → Open or drag JPGs into the workspace.
Need lossless edits or sharp text overlays? Use HEIC to PNG instead. Building web assets after retouch? See HEIC to WebP.
Camera Raw vs File → Open
Some Photoshop versions route HEIC through Camera Raw. That path can work for one-off imports but breaks when you:
- Run Actions or Batch on a folder still full of .heic
- Use Bridge to rate selects before opening
- Share PSDs with collaborators on PCs without HEIF codecs
Standardize on JPG masters (or PNG for graphics) before any automation.
Windows vs Mac in 2026
| Platform | Quick note |
|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | Install HEIF Image Extensions + HEVC from Microsoft Store if allowed; otherwise convert in browser |
| macOS | Photos and Preview open HEIC natively; Photoshop may still choke on 48MP ProRAW HEIC exports |
| Both | Browser convert avoids admin rights and keeps files off cloud upload sites |
Batch size tips
| Count | Tip |
|---|---|
| 1–30 | One browser session; open JPGs directly in Photoshop |
| 50–300 | ZIP download from HEIC to JPG; unzip into a _jpg subfolder |
| 300+ | Split by shoot day; run Actions per folder to avoid RAM spikes |
If colors look flat after convert, read HEIC colors washed out after convert.
iPhone settings to reduce future pain
- Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible — new photos save as JPEG
- Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC — "Automatic" may still send HEIC to Windows; see transfer iPhone photos to Windows
